Millet - the beauty grain

The different types of millet are members of the grass family. The following types are mainly used for processing:

Proso millet

Foxtail millet

Sorghum

The millet most commonly used in Switzerland is proso millet. The ZWICKY millet is predominantly imported from the USA (Dakota). There, the best conditions for good growth are present, i.e. generally warm and sunny. The period between sowing and harvesting (growing season) is only 60 to 80 days. Further large areas where millet is grown can be found in Africa, Argentina, the Balkans and all over Asia. Wherever the climate is too dry to grow rice, millet is the crop of choice.

Unlike Sorghum, both proso and foxtail millet do not have gluten and are therefore less suitable for baking. All the better though for making porridge, pancakes and flans. All types of millet are high in silicic acid, fluoride, vitamins and other minerals which all have a beneficial effect on skin conditions and on the healthy development of lustrous hair and strong nails and radiant skin.

There’s a very good reason millet is called the beauty grain.
